Do you Want to Obtain the Colombian Independent Professional Visa?

According to Article 76 of Resolution #5477 of 2022, if you are a foreign professional who aspires to live in Colombia and practice your profession independently, you may apply for the Colombian Independent Professional Visa. This visa allows you to reside legally in Colombia for up to three years, with the possibility of renewal.

Who Can Apply for This Visa?

In general, any foreign professional may apply for this visa. If your profession is regulated, such as law, engineering, accounting, medicine, among others, you must obtain the validation of your degree and the Professional Card, license, or authorization from the corresponding professional association. If your profession is not regulated, you must demonstrate that it is of interest to the country.

Specific Requirements for the Colombian Independent Professional Visa:

  • Letter indicating the occupation or activity you intend to practice in the country in the exercise of your profession.
  • Copy of the validation of your degree by the Colombian Ministry of National Education.
  • Degrees that can be validated in Colombia:
    • Technical and technological
    • Undergraduate, bachelor's, degrees, or bachelor's degrees
    • Master's degrees and medical specialties
    • Doctorates
    • Validation costs in 2023: Approximately COP 778,836 (USD 185.19) for undergraduate degrees and COP 883,866 (USD 210) for postgraduate degrees. Processing time is 60 to 180 days.
  • Demonstrate compliance with other requirements for the practice of the profession in accordance with current laws, including the presentation of the Professional Card, license, or provisional permit granted by the corresponding professional association.
  • Bank statement in the name of the foreigner, issued no more than 30 days before, showing the date of account opening, types of products, and average balance and monthly movement corresponding to the last six months. You must demonstrate an average monthly income equal to or greater than five times the current monthly legal minimum wage, which is COP 5,800,000 (approximately USD 1,380 at an exchange rate of COP 4,200 per USD) in 2023.
  • For activities based on professional experience rather than academic training, you must provide documents or certifications that support your suitability and experience.
  • Health insurance policy, contract, program, or assistance plan with coverage in the national territory.
  • Digital photo of your face with a white background, 4 x 3 cm in size, with a neutral expression and without accessories such as earrings, glasses, hats, or white shirts, and a maximum weight of 100 kb.
  • Pay government fees: Study USD 54, Issuance USD 270, Foreigner Identification Card approximately USD 50.

Other Documents that May Be Required:

  • If you are in Colombia, you must have a valid legal stay or "Safe-conduct".
  • Itinerary or travel tickets if you are outside the country, police or criminal record certificate from your country of origin or residence with apostille.
  • Stay address: Either in a hotel, temporary accommodation, rented accommodation, or the place where you will be received.

Benefits of the Colombian Independent Professional Visa:

  • Temporary residence in Colombia for up to three (03) years, with the possibility of accumulating time for permanent residence.
  • Permission to work in Colombia in the profession for which the visa was applied for.
  • Inclusion of dependents: spouse or permanent partner and minor children or dependents.
  • Colombian identity document necessary to access health services, education, opening accounts, etc.
  • Application online or at any Colombian Consulate in the world.

Limitations of the Colombian Independent Professional Visa:

  • Maintain your legal stay and renew your visa before it expires.
  • Practice the profession for which you obtained the visa.
  • Comply with the laws of the country, including tax payment.
